Mellon Udrigle

Many of the beaches in the northwest of Scotland are remarkable. Mellon Udrigle beach is a good example. Typically the beaches have white untouched sand, deep blue sea, blue skies and white clouds. Of course, they're not always like that, but in our experience they often are. The temperatures aren't necessarily what they might be, but nevertheless the beaches are beautiful. Mellon Udrigle is a small remote coastal hamlet on the north west coast of Ross-shire in the Scottish Highlands.

Mellon Udrigle is near the end of the peninsula to the west of Gruinard Bay and the north west of Gruinard Island. Gruinard Island was the location of biological warfare experiments during the Second World War. Anthrax was tested as a potential biological weapon - what a great idea that was. For many years afterwards it was considered too dangerous and expensive to decontaminate Gruinard Island. Eventually, in 1986 a determined effort was made and the island was finally declared safe in 1990.
